The Earth Shook the End of the World: Earthquake in Southern Chile

If you thought only your morning Zoom calls could pull the ground out from under your feet, the residents of southern Chile now know that feeling in a much more literal way. At the very end of the map, where even penguins struggle to tell Argentinians from Chileans, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck. According to Chilean seismologists, the epicenter was located in the Magallanes region, where, as locals joke, even GPS sometimes gets lost.

Still, locals respond with the stoicism typical of southerners: “The wind shakes us harder here!” fishermen insist. But experts warn: the region’s seismic activity is no joke, though there’s no need to panic either. Authorities urgently delivered coffee and strong words to the epicenter area, and also reminded everyone: if it shakes, don’t film it for TikTok—run to a safe place.

Fortunately, no infrastructure damage has been reported, and the penguins—as always—remain unflappable. They say it’s just because they don’t watch the news.
